September 16, 2011, National Preparedness Month: Day 2 – How much are you willing to gamble?  Will you be covered if something does happen?

  • If there is an earthquake, hurricane, flood, etc. will your insurance cover any/all damage to your property and/or vehicle?
    • Call your insurance agent to verify coverage for possible occurrences in your area.
      • Make sure you find out what the deductible is for each scenario.  You might be surprised to find out your hurricane deductible is thousands more than your typical homeowners.
        • Begin preparing a plan for how this deductible would be covered if it became necessary.
    • Also verify that your coverage is sufficient.  If something catastrophic would happen to your house, belongings, etc. would your insurance be enough to re-build and/or replace?
  • Also, be aware that certain insurance like flood insurance has a 30 day waiting period before taking effect as well as, restrictions on when a policy can be written.  Don’t wait until the last minute or the threat is imminent before obtaining the right insurance coverage for your family.
  • To obtain a list of the natural hazards that may affect your area, go to the following site.  Scroll down to the picture of the United States (middle of the page) and enter your zip code.
