Solutions For Simplifying Your Life

An Organized Holiday Season: Week 2 October 12, 2012

There are only 10 full weeks left until Christmas!  I started last week preparing for the holiday season by putting together a holiday binder.  This week I am preparing my gift list and budget (ugh).

Confession, I am a terrible gift giver.  I have really good intentions and I enjoy giving gifts.  I am just not very good at finding that “perfect” gift that will bring extreme joy to the receiver.  So, every year I put off buying gifts the whole season because I am sure that I will eventually come across that “perfect gift.  Problem is…I rarely do so I end up spending a ton of money on a not so meaningful gift.

However, there is this thing that is in my life that was not last holiday season and I believe that thing is the answer to my gift giving dilemmas!  That thing is Pinterest!  I have started pinning gift ideas and one pin in particular really has me excited, Turn Handwritten Recipes Into Tea Towels.  This is the sweetest idea and will be an awesome gift for all the adults in my family.

This year I will get ahead start on my gift list so that I do not end up blowing my budget completely.  If you would like to join me here are some great resources for creating a gift list and a holiday budget.

And because Halloween is right around the corner, my girls and I will be getting our “You’ve Been Booed” bags together over the weekend.  We started this tradition last year and we had a lot of fun treating our neighbors.

I came across this super fun recipe at Organized Christmas and had to share….Pumpkin Poop will make a great “You’ve Been Booed” bag treat.

Making Your Home a Haven Week 3…Struggling With Discontent October 21, 2011

Women Living Well 31 Day Fall Challenge: Week #3

How about you?  Do you ever struggle with being discontent?  And how does choosing contentment help with making your home a haven?

And you know what comes of choosing contentment? Peace.  Love.  Joy.  And those are certainly things that help to make a home a haven! ~ Women Living Well

This week’s challenge was choosing contentment, the two lines above really stood out to me.  My family has undergone quite a few changes over the last year and a half and 90% of it has been outside of our control.  Last May I decided to follow my dreams, I left my very successful corporate career so I could get my Master’s degree and start my own business.  I watched the news, I knew that the economy was in bad shape and jobs were hard to come by.  My mother in law repeatedly told me that I was crazy for leaving a good, secure job.  Maybe I was crazy but every time I looked at my girls I thought…I keep telling them to “dream big”…so shouldn’t I practice what I preach?  We were in very good shape financially or I would have never made this big leap into the unknown.  So, I did it…. May 21st was my last day at my corporate job.  I don’t do anything lightly…I had prayed and planned for a year before I actually made this decision.  I felt really good about the decision I (along with my husband) had made.  I was traveling 75% of my time with my job – which is not a good situation when you have two – two year olds at home.

For six blissful days I lived my dream…..I filled out the forms so I could start school in the fall; I researched how to start a small business, etc.  Then on the morning of May 28th, seven days after I left my very secure, well paying corporate job, my husband wakes me up to tell me he is being laid off.

I am sorry…can you repeat that.  It hit us like a ton of bricks out of no where.  His company was restructuring and he was the newest guy and it was happening.  How could this be….I had prayed and planned and prayed and planned.  Really….seven days after me leaving my job?  I was angry.  Sure we had enough money in the bank to get by for awhile (a blessing)….but now we don’t have insurance for our girls.  Forget my Master’s degree…forget my own business…forget my “big dreams.”

My husband was very lucky to find a job within two months.  I feel very blessed because I know that there are a lot of folks out of work for over a year.  However, this job paid about 20% less and required us to move.  We were also very blessed to sell our house within weeks of putting it on the market.  However, we took a huge loss and had to come to the table with a big check.  We love our new State.  However, the cost of living is 26% higher than our previous State. So while we have many blessings.  I struggle daily with our set-backs.  I had pepped myself up to DREAM BIG and to go after this BIG DREAM and now because of our current situation I am in holding mode on many things.  It is very hard for me to be content with our current situation.  I find myself complaining often and doing the whole “what if” series daily.  I know this wears my husband down.  He is working very hard and feels guilty because he feels like it is his fault. Obviously this is not conducive to making our home a haven.

This is the perfect challenge for me.

31 Day Fall Challenge Making Your Home A Haven

Women Living Well 31 Day Fall Challenge: Week #2

Last week we had a two-fold challenge, “light a candle and every time you see the glimmer of it pray for peace in your home“. I want to encourage you to keep your candles and prayers going. ~ Women Living Well

So I feel that Week 1 has been a huge success in our household!  I really feel like praying and focusing on our family really made a difference in my attitude.  If I found myself raising my voice or losing my patience with my girls, I would stop and ask myself…is this the best way to handle this?…what would be more effective?  I could also see the change in my attitude had a very positive effect on my girls’ attitude.  While I won’t say that it was all rainbows and kittens (I mean come on…two THREE year olds!)  it was by far the best week we have had in a long time!  Progress…I will take it!

So, this week’s challenge is two-fold also:

Play soft music everyday in your home. Choose music that the family enjoys.

Then, focus on using peaceful words and maintaining peaceful relationships. Role model gentleness with your words this week and while you’re add it have a little fun.  Since the music is going,  grab your husband or children and dance! ~ Women Living Well

Okay, so Week 2’s challenge was not quite as easy for me as Week 1’s challenge.  I am just not a music person.  I know that is strange but if I am in the car I listen to audio books or talk shows (love my Oprah channel!)  When I am exercising, I watch t.v.  I don’t dislike music, I just would rather listen to a book or show.  I won an iPod when they first came out, after it sat in the box untouched for 3 months….my husband claimed it for his own!   Now my husband and my girls LOVE music.  The girls are always singing and dancing.

So, thanks to satellite t.v. there is a channel for just about any type of music you want to hear.  So, instead of turning on Dora the Explorer or Food Network….we turned on soft music.  I did find it very calming first thing in the morning before the kids got up.  It was much nicer to wake up to calming music instead of listening to all the bad in the world on the morning news.  The kids did not take to the soft music very well….they wanted fast music so they could dance.

Tuesday after dinner, I turned the girls’ fast music on and got up and danced with them.  I thought my husband was going to lose it!  Not that I am boring no fun mom….but I have to admit….I have been a little “serious” lately.  When life gets overwhelming, it is easy to say….I don’t have time to play because I have a hundred things to do.  It felt really good to be silly with the girls.

Make Your Home a Haven Week 1…My Candle is Burning Bright October 6, 2011

Women Living Well 31 Day Fall Challenge

Women Living Well 31 Day Fall Challenge: Week #1

Go buy an extra large candle and light a candle everyday in your home. I will be starting mine in the morning! But you can start yours at dinner time. Do what makes sense for your family. I will be placing mine in the kitchen – the main hub of my home. Eachtime the candle catches your eye, say a prayer for peace in your home.

After receiving my assignment for week 1, I went out and bought a special candle just for this challenge.  I love the scents of Fall…actually I love EVERYTHING about Fall…pumpkins, leaves, colors, etc.  I decided on a three scented candle: Cinnamon Pecan, Pumpkin Pie and Fireplace Glow…it smells delicious!  Every time I get a whiff of it I can’t help but think happy thoughts.

I have my candle in the dining room, which I walk by 100 times a day.  So, every time I go by and see the flicker of light I remember to say a prayer for my family.  One thing that has been in the forefront of my mind all week is my lack of patience with my 3 y.o. twins.  I  love my girls dearly but man….they didn’t get the memo about terrible twos….the twos were nothing compared with the threes.  They know exactly which buttons to push…and they push and push and push and push….

However, I am very aware that when I lose my temper all I am doing is teaching them to lose their temper.  So!  Patience has been the main topic of my prayers for my family this week.

Distant or Engaged? Making Your Home a Haven October 3, 2011

31 Day Fall Challenge Making Your Home a Haven

I am a big fan of Women Living Well Ministries, a blog about marriage, parenting and homemaking.  They are currently doing a 31 Day Fall Challenge – Making Your Home a Haven.

What makes a home a haven? Is it having a home that looks like it popped out of Better Homes and Gardens with unbelievable decorating? Is it a home that has massive amounts of toys, food to feast on, video games stacked high and every movie imaginable to view? Is it a certain number of square feet, a separate bedroom for each child, or the neighborhood you live in?

No. It is not the things we have or the things we do not have that make our homes a haven. It’s you – my dear reader – you are the key to making the home a haven.

They go on to describe two different kinds of households.  In the first household, the woman is distant.  In the second household the woman is engaged.  While I would like to say that I am like household #2 100% of the time, some of the examples in the first household…well, kinda made me stop and think.  So, I am all in for this challenge!  I don’t think there is anything more important than my family that I could invest my time and energy in….

Week #1 challenge:

Go buy an extra large candle and light a candle everyday in your home. I will be starting mine in the morning! But you can start yours at dinner time. Do what makes sense for your family. I will be placing mine in the kitchen – the main hub of my home. Each time the candle catches your eye, say a prayer for peace in your home.

Please go to Women Living Well to read more and to sign up for this challenge….and then let me know how it is going for you!
